OFFER IN COMPROMISE
When you lose a job, go through a divorce, have a business fail or suffer an illness, it is very common to incur large tax debts. Often, you cannot pay these debts. The IRS understands this and created the Fresh Start Program to help tax payers with insurmountable bills. The most important of these initiatives is the Offer in Compromise program.
An Offer in Compromise is a program where the Internal Revenue Service and state tax collectors allow the taxpayer to pay their taxes based on ability to pay rather than what is owed. Once an offer is accepted, the taxpayer will make between one and twenty four monthly payments to pay their offer. At the end of these payments, your tax debt and liens are cleared.
This is not an easy process and the IRS only accepts about 30% of the offers it receives. This is why it is critical to have the best representation possible.
